Backyard Bulls- Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania
In 1913 the first shipment of elk from Yellowstone arrived in The Keystone State to kick off the reintroduction efforts. A few more “deliveries” followed and slightly more than a decade later the first elk season opened in 1927. The elk season has continued to grow with more tags being offered almost every year.
As with most elk applications, the Pennsylvania system is slightly complicated. Each applicant can apply for three separate tags, each of which is from a separate drawing. The application period opens mid July and closes July 31st.
Archery Season (September) 14 antlered, 15 antlerless
General Season (November) 32 antlered, 77 antlerless
Late Season (January) 10 antlered, 39 antlerless
Cost: $11.97 per application or $35.91 for all three. For each application you must pick one of the 14 zones. For each unsuccessful draw you will be awarded a bonus point. Even if you are successful in one of the three applications you will be awarded a bonus point for the other two.
The unique thing about Pennsylvania is that a 300” bull could very well come from any of the 14 units. With a little research you can find the unit that is right for you, if you happen to be one of the fortunate applicants that draw a golden ticket.
To apply go to huntfish.pa.gov and create an account if you do not already have one. If you have questions regarding the application process or researching specific elk zones feel free to reach out to me at maxbeitzel@gmail.com.
